Freshwater Mussels are a bivalve, they have two valves (shells) hinged together that can open a small distance. They live on the bottom of rivers and other freshwater aquatic habitats, feeding by filtering the water for microscopic animals and plants. They can be kept in unheated aquaria or outdoor ponds, and are used as an egg-incubator by Bitterlings.
