A valued angling fish, the Australian Bass also makes an interesting aquarium subject. Bass are native to coastal streams along much of eastern Australia. They are suitable for unheated aquaria containing larger native species such as Silver Perch and can also be stocked in garden ponds or farm dams. Younger specimens can be fed foods such as bloodworm, older fish prefer meaty foods such as crickets or prawn pieces. They commonly grow to 1 kg or more, but normally remain smaller in aquaria.
